We thought everything we saw, read and heard about the Sony Ericsson Jalou was a joke. The press release, for example, states (amongst other classic examples of drivel too numerous to mention) that “Structured forms, intricate corners, hidden depths and jewel accents are set to be some of the hottest fashion trends in 2010. You can also expect to see deep and natural jewel colours on the runway next year.” Which made us laugh. Then elsewhere it features such patronising, borderline offensive gems as “Never mind a signature necklace or oversized shades; Jalou is the perfect accessory.”

Then we noticed that the man quoted in most of these quotes is the clearly fictional and, again, borderline offensive, Charles Hunt. Mr C Hunt. Yep. You read that right. Google it if you don’t believe us. It’s undertstandable, perhaps, that Sony Ericsson might have worries about the fact that a phone they were marketing towards women had as its creative lead a man. But don’t worry! He’s named after a part of the lady’s body, at least! Thank goodness for that.

So, apart from these comic goldmines, is there much else to say about the Sony Ericsson Jalou? Well, this Sony Ericsson Jalou review might beg to differ, but we think not to be honest. If you’re really, positively, definitely set on owning a phone that sets you apart from the crowd, then fair enough, this might be for you. But with its 3.2MP camera, 2 inch screen, no WiFi, no GPS, no, well, nothing really much to write home about at all, we have to wonder whether apart from its “looks” there’s anything here worth paying attention to at all.

Who knows, maybe we’re wrong, maybe the world is ready for a phone that’s all “looks” and no insides. But then, we just can’t write about this phone’s “looks” with adding those quotation marks. Because thinking of this as a good looking phone is the biggest joke of all, right?

A Beautiful Fashion Phone with a lot of First

The Jalou comes in a clamshell design sculpted with gem-like facets on its body. It will reach its markets with a choice of three jewelry colors: Onyx Black, Aquamarine Blue and Deep Amethyst. At a handbag-friendly 84 grams and no larger than 73 mm tall when folded, the ladies might easily mistake this for their compact make-up.

Understandably so, its 2-inch QVGA screen doubles up as a compact mirror at a flick of a dedicated key – real novelty for a ladies trendy mobile phone. It’s also the first to feature the WalkMate pedometer that can be quite useful when jogging or taking a walk.

Going down to its features, as a fashion phone, don’t expect outstanding bells and whistles often reserved for flagship handsets. Apart from its so-so 2” screen, there’s a perfunctory CyberShot 3.2 megapixel camera, Walkman media player, video recording, a browser supporting YouTube and social networking applications. In addition, the Sony Ericsson Jalou has Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and stereo FM radio. As a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a triband UMTS with 3G/HSDPA high speed connectivity support, the Jalou is definitely a very current and capable fashion phone.

Enter Dolce & Gabbana

Oh and you’ll see a limited edition Sony Ericsson Jalou dressed up with a 24-k Gold trim around a gorgeous rose coloured body by no less than Dolce & Gabbana. You know them; they love to convert beautiful mobile handsets into upscale fashion accessories. An upscale price tag naturally goes with it.
